Writing Assignment 1

Biography of my sister

My mother and sister in Europe

My sister Casey Twist was born on November 14th, 1996 in Delray Beach, Florida. A few years later, Casey and my parents moved to Boca Raton, Florida in 1999 because I was being born. Casey’s fondest memories as a child were when she played outside with her next door neighbors, who she considers her best friends to this day. Our parents encouraged us to play outside and did not allow many video games, so she loved going on boat rides and spending time swimming in the pool. Being around the water was an enormous part of her childhood. During the summer as kids we would go on vacation every year to the Florida Keys. Our parents loved taking us fishing and snorkeling, and as Casey got older she developed her own passion for diving and spear fishing. Casey had two pets as a kid, in 2003 our parents allowed her to adopt a stray cat that lived on our street. She named the cat Squeaker because of her unique meow. In 2008, we rescued a 7 month old Labrador mix while we were on our way to the Florida Keys. Casey attended Boca Raton High School and was very involved with the student government and clubs. Her favorite thing about high school was all the new people she met in her four years there. She met one of her best friends in a photography class during her freshman year. That girl ended up being her first college roommate at the University of Florida in 2015. Once she graduated high school with straight As, she pursued a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Casey and her best friend stayed at Beaty Towers freshman year. She recalls her that year being the most memorable, because it was her first taste of the college life and game day Saturdays at UF. As an upperclassman, Casey lived at a house where she was reunited with her old next-door neighbors. Her house was on University Avenue across from the stadium, she always remembered being able to pay her bills by charging people to park at her house on game days. By this time I was attending college with her, so every year our parents came up for a football game and threw a massive tailgate party for us. Now that she has graduated, those are the things she missed the most about college. This past year she finished up her final semester and earned a Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. For a graduation gift, Casey and my mother took a trip to Europe together and traveled to France, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Hungary, and Germany. Currently, she resides in Jupiter, Florida where she landed her dream job. She is very happy with the position she is in because she’s able to stay in sunny South Florida and be close to the ocean. Even better, our old next door neighbors now reside in Jupiter, as well as our uncle who is also a UF graduate. Casey always tells me how grateful she is to keep her family close and not leave the area she loves.

Writing Assignment 3- Game Recap

The Miami Heat became world champions last night in one of the greatest Finals series ever, edging out a 95-88 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 7. This was the 19th NBA Finals that had to be decided by a seventh game. Miami held the lead for the entirety of the fourth quarter, while the Spurs kept fighting for life. San Antonio knocked down several crucial shots to shorten the lead to 2 points but it wasn’t enough.

The third championship will come home because of another heroic performance by Lebron James, who put up 37 points and sunk the most crucial shot in the game giving Miami a 92-88 lead with less than 30 seconds remaining. Lebron received his 2nd Finals MVP for his performance, joining some elite company with only eleven other players winning the Finals MVP more than once. James received some help from his sidekick Dwyane Wade who recorded a double double with 23 points. With Chris Bosh not even recording a basket, role players like Mario Chalmers and Shane Battier had to come up big. Battier shined on the biggest stage by scoring all 18 of his points from beyond the arc. For the Spurs, Tim Duncan led the way as usual putting up 24 points and 12 rebounds while being very active on the defensive end. The young Kawhi Leonard flashed his potential again scoring 19 points while also being the primary defender on Lebron James.

The Spurs have been in these moments so many times before; it was their 5th finals appearance since 1999. However, they’ve never faced a squad as explosive and smart as this Miami Heat team. There were 9 potential hall of famers participating in this thrilling series, making it an unforgettable Finals. This was an all time great matchup between the aging but talented veterans versus the young guns trying to repeat.

Writing Assignment 2

Tottenham Hotspur will face off against RB Leipzig on February 19th at 3:00 p.m. in Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The two squads will be playing in the first leg of the round of sixteen in the UEFA Champions League competition. It will be important for Tottenham Hotspur to get a favorable result in the first leg while they have a home field advantage.

The Spurs are coming off of a 3-1 loss to Bayern Munich in group stages but already had enough points to advance into the elimination stages. They finished second in Group B. The Spurs will be going without their premiere striker Harry Kane who suffered a hamstring injury in January against Southampton. Kane was the Spurs leading goal scorer in the Champions League with six goals.

RB Leipzig’s last fixture ended in a 2-2 draw against Lyon. They will be enjoying their first appearance in the round of sixteen of the Champions League. They will be lead by forwards Emil Forsberg and Timo Werner who both have three goals in Champions League play so far.

The Spurs recently made a coaching change in November of last year hiring legendary manager Jose Mourinho. The move by the Spurs brings in a highly skilled manager with plenty of Champions League experience. Mourinho won a Champions League title in 2004 with Porto and in 2010 with Inter Milan.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
